The Meridiana Hotel is situated on a promontory behind the small church of the Madonna delle Grazie, on the road that takes its name. This road connects Taormina to the sea, the station, Villagonia and Giardini Naxos. Facing the hotel, are the blue and crystal waters of the bay of Taormina and Giardini-Naxos.
This small church dates back to the second half of the 19th century. Until then, there was only a small niche with an icon of the Madonna delle Grazie which was lost during the construction of the Chapel. History tells us that the Chapel was built by the seaman Francesco Parisi to give thanks for escaping a cloudburst during a stormy night. Having seen from his boat a small light coming from the coast that was the niche in question, he invocated the Madonna della Grazie and promised that, if he saved himself, he would have built a Chapel on the very spot where the light was coming from. And so it was that he bought the land and built a small church in honour of the Madonna delle Grazie. The Chapel is privately owned and, as for the founder’s will, the ownership goes down the generations following the female line of descent.
On the 2nd of July celebrations for the feast of the Madonna delle Grazie take place, the effigy is decorated with jewellery and gold donated by the devotees. On this day two masses are celebrated, one in the morning and the other in the evening at 19:00. Since the Madonna is the protector of the sea, this festivity reunites devotees not only from Taormina but from other towns too like Giardini-Naxos, people come up the small road to pray and give thanks for the miracles and help received.
